Located just inside the Parkview Packnett Family Cancer Institute (PFCI), the Wig Boutique, which was established in 2018, offers a selection of wigs, hats and scarves for patients experiencing hair loss during cancer treatment. The goal of the boutique is to enhance self-image and well-being, allowing patients to recognize themselves again during a difficult time.

“I have been told that the first or second question most women ask once they receive their diagnosis is, ‘Will I lose my hair?’” says Angie Matteson, master stylist at the Wig Boutique. “The wig program gives our patients confidence and a bit of normalcy in their day-to-day journey.”

Matteson has been with the boutique for five years and has spent 40 years working as a hairstylist. Her involvement with the boutique is personal and rooted in gratitude.

“Twenty-five years ago, a family loved one was killed in the line of duty here in Fort Wayne,” Matteson said. “This community showered us with love and kindness, and I always wanted to give that same support to others.”

Inside the Wig Boutique, the experience goes beyond selecting a wig. It’s a space where healing often begins.

“Many sweet connections get made in the Wig Boutique, but a few have touched my heart in an extra special way,” Matteson says. “One even turned into a lifelong friendship.”

She also describes the powerful bonds formed while shaving a patient’s head for the first time. “We cry, we laugh, and sometimes we get angry,” Matteson says. “But the goal is always to bring them back to a place of hope and confidence when they look in the mirror.”

One of the most moving moments, she says, came after a woman from a satellite campus found a wig she loved. Her husband later returned to the boutique in tears. “Thank you for giving me my wife back,” he said, explaining that she had disconnected after her diagnosis. “When she put that wig on, I saw her smile again for the first time since we heard the word cancer.”

Matteson also recalls helping a mother of the bride who was heartbroken at the thought of losing her hair before her daughter’s wedding. Together, they found a wig that matched her natural hair so closely that it mirrored her original style. “Moments like that remind you why this work matters,” she adds.

The Wig Boutique offers a diverse selection of wigs to suit various hair textures, styles and colors. Services include wig selection and fitting, guidance on hair care, and additional support such as skincare and makeup tips.

The Wig Boutique is made possible through donations to the Transformative Cancer Care Fund via the Parkview Health Foundation, which also supports the wig stylist position. Each year, the Foundation provides approximately 200 wigs to patients in need.

The Wig Boutique was established in 2018 to help restore confidence and a sense of self during treatment.

Patients are seen on a need-based basis. The Wig Boutique is currently staffed by Angie and one volunteer, and the program is currently seeking licensed stylists who have a heart for serving patients. Volunteer availability is especially needed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Wig Boutique is open several days each week to best accommodate patients. Those interested in this service can speak with their care navigator for more information.
