Allen County Public Library celebrates National Library Week, seeks public support amid uncertainty

What’s happening: ACPL is celebrating the 2025 National Library Week theme “Drawn to the Library!” The week-long event runs from April 6 to 12 and aims to highlight all the services that draw patrons to the library.

Why it matters: Events like National Library Week highlight the importance of public resources and services that might often be taken for granted or forgotten about. According to the library, they had 1.7 million visits last year and issued more than 24,000 library cards to new patrons. Allen County Public Library is also home to one of the nation’s largest public genealogy centers.

Libraries in Indiana are facing cuts at the state level and in March, the White House issued an Executive Order that called for the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is the nation's only federal agency tasked with supporting America’s libraries and museums. According to an open letter from ACPL’s Executive Director Susan Baier, this could have a serious impact on the services provided by the library, making it all the more important to emphasize the importance of their work.

What they’re saying: “Libraries across the country are observing National Library Week this week, April 6 through 12. It’s a week of honoring the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities. While this is a week of celebration, it also comes with concern about recent events that could have a significant effect on the future of libraries in Indiana and across the country.” -ACPL Executive Director Susan Baier
