Brittiane was born and raised in Fort Wayne, and took a moment to speak with us on the lawn of the Allen County Courthouse in Downtown Fort Wayne. “Don’t be part of the problem. Be part of the solution. The only thing that separates us is the color of our skin. Other than that, what separates us when you look at someone? Whether someone has love in their heart or hate in their heart, they still bleed red. We are no different. I am biracial and have to try harder to fit in because of it. I was born in 1987 and that has given me time and patience. I grew up with both sets of my grandparents so that I could hear the truth. The best thing I have experienced is that having compassion is more important than hate. All these people here are my brothers and my sisters. What everyone is experiencing this week is nothing new to me. This is what I wake up to every single day. Every day I wonder if someone will choose to be kind to me or unkind to me. Every single day. I believe that if you show up with love and a smile, you are accepted by me. My friend circle here in Fort Wayne is made up of all kinds of people from the skateboard kid to the young kids of every color that I have taken under my wing. I’m like a big sister. I know that people are hurting but you can take that hurt and turn it into something positive. I just don’t know what we did to anyone to make them hate me so much. You can create positivity in your own life and those you interact with. I choose to have compassion. I choose to be kind. I choose to forgive.” #PeopleofNEI
