DJ Unga is originally from Jamaica and has lived in New York, Miami, and Chicago before moving to Fort Wayne. He is the host of Jam Rockan, a reggae music show, on 95.7 FM WELT-LP that is recorded in Downtown Fort Wayne. It’s not uncommon to see him riding his bike around our city streets. “I came to Fort Wayne because there were jobs here. This was a sleepy town but I decided not to leave. I like it here, man. To be honest, I fell in love with the area. It reminds me of the quiet place I am from in Jamaica. I’ve been here now for over 20 years. You see, Fort Wayne is on the cusp, man. It’s such a unique town from any other city in America. You look at places like Chicago and Indy; we are next. This place has history. It’s cool. I have watched so much growth over the last 20 years. I have faith, and it’s happening all around us. Back in the day, the streets of downtown were so dead. You could see tumbleweed. Now there are people walking and riding all around. What I love most about this city is that it’s not claustrophobic. It’s stretched out for an urban place. We have the best bike trails here, man. I love the Rivergreenway. What a great place to walk. I just love to ride my bike. From Parkview Field to Promenade, it’s the perfect place to enjoy leisure time. The thing about us humans is that everyone leaves a footprint. People in Fort Wayne have a unique footprint, but I feel like they don’t know it. There’s a lot of creativity and artists in Fort Wayne but you have to pull them out of hiding. I can feel a deep change going on here. I can feel it in my spirit, man.” #PeopleofNEI
