#PeopleofNEI: Lissa, the art activist

Northeast Indiana is evolving. These are the people shaping its future. #PeopleofNEI

This week's feature:

Lissa Brown, artist and art activist, allowed us to photograph her at her private studio at @wunderkammercompany. She is the mother of three daughters ages 6, 10, and 11. “Having 3 girls that are growing up, it’s hard to protect them from what’s going on in the world. My art has had more of an activist approach since becoming a mother. That’s why my work deals with female empowerment so that when they grow up they won’t hopefully have such a huge mess to inherit. I listen to my girls when they come home from school and pay attention to what they hear or talk about including the idea that ‘boys are strong and girls are weak.’ I like to take that on in my art and turn that upside down. I want this kind of art out in the world so they can feel beautiful as opposed to any standard they see on social media. I hope that women can understand the message of my art and get inspired by it, too. I believe that if art doesn’t make you feel something then you aren’t doing it right. Art isn’t just about pretty things. Sometimes it’s supposed to make you cry or feel awful because that is how you make changes.” #PeopleofNEI
