#PeopleofNEI: Albert, the dancer

Northeast Indiana is evolving. These are the people shaping its future. #PeopleofNEI

This week's feature:

Albert, 28, is a dancer and performer. He started dancing at age 10 while at the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne. By 16, he was leading a class there with 7 girls and 7 boys. He is active with Fort Wayne Dance Collective, dAnce.Kontemporary, and teaching dance at local schools including South Side and Lakeside. "I started to dance because it was fun. Then I learned I could dance well, and I started taking it more seriously. It’s always been a positive outlet, especially being a black guy in the community. You don’t often see dancers that look like me in Fort Wayne, but it’s important. I find that because I am a black male, I often get a lot of attention for my dancing even when I just want to be in the background. I try to stay humble and set a good example for kids by teaching them. I see kids coming out of their shells around me and I see myself rubbing off on them in their attitudes when they dance. I have danced and taught everything from hip hop to lyrical jazz, and tap. I didn't use to dance in heels but when I tried it, I realized I could do it. It's all about being sassy and having the attitude. It's important to have that attitude when you are connecting with others through dance." #PeopleofNEI
