Gus was a DREAMer and is now a legal resident of the United States after a four year immigration process. He lives in the Bluffton area and works each day in Decatur. His current passion is the 2nd Street Artists Lofts in Decatur, and it’s hard to walk anywhere without someone recognizing him and starting a conversation. “I was born in Mexico City but moved to Bluffton during middle school. Since going back to Mexico, it makes you have a great appreciation for what we have in America. When I was in Mexico, I lived in a 6 foot by 6 foot room with my parents. They have both passed away since then and now I take value in my struggles. I want to be a cheerleader for others because I have so much appreciation for simple liberties and things like clean streets and a built in infrastructure like we have here in northeast Indiana. Being involved in the 2nd Street Artist Lofts in Decatur is part of the innovation that is happening in the area. This space will place Decatur on the map because it gives affordable housing to creatives. It’s about feeling inspired in a space so that creatives want to create something of their own. I have a wife and two young sons. When I think about the future for my sons, it’s about involvement and seeing the fruits of your labor. What you put into a small town, you can actively see the change. You can see and feel the friendliness. Now that I’m involved and accepted, it’s encouraging. I hope my boys see that and want to be part of that, too. Being this involved in Decatur is time away from home so it’s all about passion and love. It has to be. If you’re away from home, you want it to be worth while. Decatur is worth it. It’s progressive for a small town. There is a lot to get involved in. You can get as much out as you put in here. There is lots to buy in on, and I love seeing others jump in and use their talents for the greater good of this community. I feel very rooted here.” #PeopleofNEI
