Doris (photographed at her Fort Wayne home) is 100 years old and has lived in Fort Wayne for the last 93 years. “I was born in 1918. My parents divorced when I was two and my grandparents raised me. My grandfather moved us here when I was only seven years old. I graduated from South Side High School in 1936 (both of my kids graduated from there, too) and then I married my husband in 1937. We were married for 54 years when he passed away at age 73. I have two children (one passed away at age 59), five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and my first great-great grandchild is on the way. My granddaughter is going to be a grandmother. She’s going to be a good one, too. I have lived in my home on the south side of Fort Wayne since 1958. I can’t imagine leaving. I didn’t start driving until my seventies when my husband died, but the car was just sitting in the garage and figured I should put it to use. Now, I love talking with people, playing cards, and I do water aerobics three days a week at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA. I have different people that I call on to help me with things and they check up on me, too. It just doesn’t seem possible that I am about to turn 101. It’s unbelievable and it goes by so quick. Fort Wayne has changed a lot over the last 100 years but then so has the whole world. It doesn’t bother me much. I stay busy here in my own little world. Time just goes by so fast and the years really do roll by but I still feel young inside.” #PeopleofNEI
