Chef Bun Lim has lived in northeast Indiana since 1979. He is an award-winning chef that creates all of his dishes from scratch and is fluent in Mandarin, Malay, and English. His entire life in Fort Wayne is the result of his work ethic. “I moved to Fort Wayne from Malaysia in 1979 at the age of 23. I came here for school and graduated in 1983. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. I’m the baby of my family and all of my siblings still live back home. I only get to visit them every five years or so. I am the first and only person in my family to graduate from a university. They are really proud of me and I feel lucky that I enjoy my work this much. I have always loved food and cooking. It’s my passion but I never knew that I would grow to be a chef when I was younger. I started as a dishwasher and had to work my way up, attend culinary school, and learn the food and culture here. It took a lot of effort and there was a culture shock in the beginning, but I enjoy living here. I enjoy my work and feel comfortable now. Fort Wayne is not too crowded with traffic or overly busy. The cost of living is so reasonable and everyone is very friendly here. After a long day of cooking, I feel really satisfied knowing that people enjoyed my dishes. Being a chef is rewarding and all of the hard work has paid off. I am so happy and feel good knowing that people love my food creations. I feel really lucky.” #PeopleofNEI
